Skateboard tour around maboneng is the actual name of the tour we went on which as you guessed it is around maboneng, maboneng is actually really small and when we were told it would take an hour I was very skeptical because of how small the place is, so I'm going to take you on a step by step basis of how we ended up spending about 2 hours touring around such a small area.
Firstly we started off with some lessons which took I would say about 30 minutes, and these lessons are for free so there's absolutely no reason to pass up on this tour simply because you can't skateboard, ayanda the guide was so pleasantly warm and chilled that it made the whole thought of taking skateboard lessons in the street not feel embarrassing and uncomfortable.
After the lessons, we started off on our tour which was just us skateboarding in the middle of the road so we really didn't need nor have to show off our pro skills which we clearly don't have, as we were riding he was telling us of how maboneng came to be what it is now and how many different stages it went through and is still going through while also showing us some of the hidden gems within.
Although the most interesting thing in my opinion is the street art and graffiti that's all over,there is so much street art that it feels like we're going through an art gallery with our very own personal art guide, he is so knowledgeable about most of it and some would argue that it's because he's from there but I believe what he said about him actually knowing some of these guys and actually being on good terms with them simply because of his personality.
The tour ran from one part of maboneng all the way tp the other side which ended on this really gorgeous rooftop bar named "Dusse", the views of Johannesburg are so amazing up there that you almost forget about everything going on around.
Ayanda is recognized by almost everyone around there that from the moment you take off you are completely at ease without worrying about anyone having any negative intentions towards you, he said the rooftop was the final part of the tour because from there we turn back although we don't use the same route but in my opinion the tour got even more interesting from there because most of the gorgeous art is on that route on our way back and we took our tour in the afternoon hours so when we were heading back most of the street art was sun-kissed and it was just absolutely stunning.
By the time we were arriving our start/finish point we were so confident on our boards that we were starting to look like actual pro's.
